Alcohol Assessment

An Alcohol Assessment is a type of test to determine if a person has an addiction to alcohol, and if so, to help that addicted person get medical care. Oftentimes the alcohol test is court ordered following a DUI or DWI. Additionally, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), Department of Transportation (DOT), or the Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) will order an assessment prior to reinstating driver’s licenses. The courts will expect a person to follow the recommendations made during the Alcohol Assessment.

Oftentimes, the assessor will utilize special tools to better understand a person’s alcohol use. One example is the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT-C). A second example is the Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (mast). These tools, along with a lifestyle questionnaire, drinking history, and medical background help the clinician during the alcohol assessment process.

It is advisable to receive an alcohol assessment through an independent testing agency – that is not affiliated with the rehab industry to ensure the alcohol assessment is completed properly and a person is not incorrectly placed into a treatment program, or if treatment is appropriate, placed into a low quality program.
