What happens at a substance abuse evaluation?

A substance abuse evaluation is a short meeting between a clinician and a person to determine if a person has a substance abuse problem. The clinician is generally a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor. At the time of the appointment, the clinician will get to know you better and any past or current alcohol or drug use patterns. The clinician is trained to ask about other areas of your life, such as your medical history and current living environment, to better understand your life situation. The substance abuse evaluation is oftentimes ordered by the court following a DUI or drug possession charge.

A common mistake is to complete the substance abuse evaluation at a local for-profit drug treatment center. In this scenario, the substance abuse evaluator has an underlying conflict-of-interest – they are trained to recruit people into treatment and make their employer money. This conflict can lead to an overall bad experience and feeling pressured.

Additionally, when medical treatment is actually needed, substance abuse evaluators at for-profit drug treatment centers will refer them into their program – instead of the best program available. Many of the best treatment centers are little advertised, non-profit treatment centers. Independent evaluators are able to refer people who need treatment into the highest quality programs around Minnesota and are less likely to misdiagnose a person; therefore, it is advisable to complete your substance abuse evaluation at an independent evaluation site.

So where can I get an independent substance abuse evaluation? One of the best independent testing sites isAvitity. They offer state-wide videoconference appointments and in-person meetings and can be reached at (612) 249-3656.
