How to pass an alcohol assessment?

Knowing that you need an alcohol assessment can be a daunting process. When the assessment is court ordered, the stakes are high as the court will expect that you follow all recommendations made during the assessment process. If I person is recommended for alcohol or drug treatment, they will be expected to comply. There is always a subset of people who complete the assessment who do not need any sort of alcohol or drug treatment. A central role of the assessor is to determine who needs treatment.

If you do not feel you would benefit from alcohol treatment or rehab, it is important that you communicate this to your assessor. Inform them on why this is. Maybe you have been sober for an extended period of time and feel stable in your sobriety. Or maybe you do not feel you have alcoholism, and in this case, explain why you do not feel this way. If you have never been through alcohol treatment before and if you are able to control your drinking – it is important that you let the assessor know this vital information.

It is extremely important that you get your alcohol assessment completed by an independent, private assessor. This is because they are truly unbiased and not expected or trained to recruit you into alcohol treatment. Instead, they should be more influenced by your wants and needs instead of an alcohol treatment centers recruitment goals. An additional benefit is that your private assessor works for you and can advocate for you throughout the assessment process.
